ORTAEKNI
The history
Ortaekni was established in 1976.
In the beginning Ortaekni was working with The University of Iceland in developing weighing scales for fishing industry. Later on, the company Marel was established to manufacture the scales.
Taximeters were developed and manufactured in Ortaekni for years. The meters were installed and serviced in taxes and vans.
Ortaekni was working with The National Telephone Company for many years, in repairing and cleaning telephones among other jobs.
After 1990 Ortaekni started manufacturing computer cables and other cables. It has since developed allot in this area and specializes in manufacturing and sales of all sorts of cables and everything that is used in connection with computers.
Ortaekni has the reputation as the only business of its kind in Iceland, that specializes in computer cables and accessories for computers.
Manufacturing and Sales
Cables are our business, both computer cables as well as other cables. Custom made cables as well as imported. We manufacture Cat-5e patch cables in thirteen different colours and Cat-6 in eleven colours. Our entire production is in accordance with the highest standards and we pride ourselves in providing our customers with quality products.
We also sell switches, VGA splitters, hubs, and USB accessories amongst other computer related items.
Another part of our operation is the manufacturing of circuit boards: The placing of electronic components on the board’s, soldering, testing and packing. We have put ourselves in a rather unique position, as we are the only company in Iceland that offers this service.
We sell software and hardware for people with special needs. The programs we sell are for the blind, visually impaired and people with dyslexia, programs for kids, mouse and keyboards for disabled and much more.
Goal
The main goal of Ortaekni is to create jobs for people with disabilities, temporary training or permanent work. Ortaekni is one of three departments of Vinnustadir OBI (The OBI Work Center), which is owned by The Organization of Disabled in Iceland (OBI). Emloyees are 13-18 people, most of them are disabled.
